District 71 finals were held in Dublin this weekend, with two members of the Westport club impressing at the highest level in these islands: the district in fact embraces all clubs in both Britain and Ireland, so to get to such an event takes both work and talent indeed.
Phil Duffy CC, CL was competing in the Humorous Speech Contest, and Dolores Brady ACS, CL was placed third in Table Topics.
The pair had previously qualified at Divisional, Area and Club levels.
“To reach this final our members had to first compete against the best speakers from 18 Toastmaster Clubs in the West, Midlands and Northwest of the country,” noted club president, Mary Davis Kelly. “That in itself is a huge achievement. To be placed in the finals against the cream of the crop of toastmasters from 180 clubs in Ireland and the UK, a pool of 4,300 members, is truly remarkable. This is testament to the success of a vibrant Westport Toastmasters Club which is now in its 16th Year. We are so proud of Dolores and Phil.”
The mission of Westport Toastmasters is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.
