The Westport branch was founded in September 2000 following a conversation on board “Wild Goose” in the Round Ireland 2000 sail race between crew members Ray Hughes (a member of Galway Toastmasters) and Oliver Whyte (then President of Westport Chamber Of Commerce which supported and funded the first two years of Toastmasters).
Toastmasters International was set up on 24th October 1924 by Dr. Ralph C. Smedley and others in Santa Ana, California and has expanded to over 10,500 clubs with more than 210,000 members in approximately 90 countries.
By 2006 there were 85 registered clubs in Ireland. Each club has a number: Westport’s number is 5684. The world is divided into districts and Ireland has been designated part of District 71. For more please see our Frequently Asked Questions.
